Beverly Greene, PhD, ABPP

Beverly Greene, PhD, ABPP is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, a Professor of Psychology at St. John’s University, and a practicing clinical psychologist in New York City. In honor of her outstanding and unusual contributions she is an elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association and 9 of its divisions.  A Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology she is a licensed psychologist in New York and New Jersey.  and was a Founding Coeditor of the recently created Journal of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies of the Institute for Critical Race and Ethnic Studies of ST. John’s University.

Dr. Greene is the recipient of over 40 national awards for outstanding, distinguished professional contributions, and is the author/coeditor of over one hundred scholarly publications. Twelve of those publications have received national awards recognizing them as significant and distinguished contributions to the psychological literature. A founding co-editor of the APA Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity 5 volume book series: Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues she is a multiple recipient of the Association for Women in Psychology’s Distinguished Publication Award (1995,2000), its  Women of Color Psychologies Publication Award (1995, 2000, 2011) and APA Society for the Psychology of Women’s Psychotherapy with Women Research award (1995,1996, 2000 for two publications). Dr. Greene is the recipient of APA’s prestigious Senior Career Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest, as well as two APA Presidential citations.   She is the coEditor of the award winning and ground breaking volume, Psychotherapy with African American Women: Innovations in Psychodynamic Perspectives and Practice (1995).  In addition to this volume she is the co-editor of two other award winning volumes, Women of Color: Integrating Ethnic and Gender Identities in Psychotherapy, and of A Minyan of Women: Family Dynamics, Jewish Identity and Psychotherapy Practice. Dr Greenes numerous awards recognize her for distinguished contributions to scholarship, teaching and training from the undergraduate to the postdoctoral level, mentoring, leadership, professional service and social justice advocacy in the form of longstanding pioneering professional contributions and for her scope of influence to the advancement of knowledge and  development of greater understandings of the intersections of race, gender and sexual orientation and the development of multiple identity/intersectional paradigms that improve the status of underrepresented groups in psychology and society. Her groundbreaking theoretical formulations have forcefully advocated for the deepening of competencies in working toward the greater integration of psychological theory, research, and practice with social justice and provides a public health framework for understanding and providing optimal mental health services to many of society’s most marginalized and disenfranchised members. A 2013 APA Presidential Citation cites her for over 30 years of distinguished contributions to multicultural psychology, diversity and social justice as an international authority on the understanding of multicultural psychology, the psychology of women, and Sexual Minority Orientation issues in psychology specifically with African American women and Lesbians of color, and as an early architect and contributor to the concept of intersectionality that now dominates the field of multicultural psychology.  Her critical analyses of psychology, combined with her clinical acumen has made a tremendous impact toward the greater integration of psychological practice and social justice. Her work challenges old paradigms and develops new psychological approaches that are more reflective of a diverse reality. A prolific scholar and creative and courageous advocate she has continued to provide the impetus for critical thought and response to social justice issues and has created a legacy to guide the future. Dr Greene is a 2022 honoree of the Ackerman Family Therapy Institutes Moving Families Forward award for her outstanding contributions to mental health that support the importance of understanding families in organized mental health. Her contributions are also featured in Mental Health America’s 2021 website salute to Black pioneers in mental health and the recent Black Mental Health Graduate Academy’s website celebration of notable and pioneering Black mental health professionals who have conducted critical research contributions to psychology and mental health counseling. She is the recent 2023 recipient of the American Psychological Associations highest honor, the Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology.
