He is currently President of the European Chapter of the Society of Psychotherapy Research and was previously Associate Editor of Psychotherapy Research. His main research interests focus on change processes and process-outcome research in psychotherapy. He and his team have developed the concept of innovative moments as events in psychotherapy in which novelties or exceptions to a previous maladaptive pattern emerge in the therapeutic conversation. This concept has inspired his research projects, and he has studied different samples and therapeutic models to understand if there are similarities and differences in the emergence of these change markers. He has also been developing research in which innovative moments are experimentally manipulated to analyze the impact on process and outcome variables. More recently, he has developed an interest in creating a consortium of psychotherapy data at the European level.
He has published around 200 articles, chapters, and books on psychotherapy.
