This video is the Gab with the Greats 2023 panel that focuses on diversity and multiculturalism. The three panelists are: Dr. Rosemary Phelps, Dr. Derald Wing Sue and Dr. Melba Vasquez. This event is organized by the APA Division 29 Early Career Psychology (ECP) domain representative Dr. Yujia Lei, and the ECP committee chair, Dr. Michelle Joaquin.

In this video, panelists share how their lived experiences influenced their thinking around Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) and motivated them to get involved in being an advocate for change; the impact of cultural values and beliefs in the counseling process; the role that historical context plays in perpetuating systemic discrimination; self-care and self-education in the Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) work, etc.

About the panelists:

  • Rosemary Phelps is a professor of Counseling Psychology and currently director of training of the University of Georgia CounselingPsychology PhD program. She has built her career around teaching, research, and practice related to diversity issues, ethnic and racial identity development, professional issues for students and faculty of color, and mentoring students.
  • Derald Wing Sue is a Professor of Psychology and Education in the Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Sue is a pioneer in the field of multicultural psychology, microaggression theory, racial dialogues, multicultural counseling and therapy, and the psychology of racism/antiracism.
  • Melba Vasquez is in part-time independent practice in Austin, Texas. One of the most exciting periods in her career was when she served as President of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2011). She is the first Latina and woman of color of 120 presidencies of APA to serve as in that role. Her theme for the 2011 APA convention was social justice.
